In a tragic development, at least thirty five (35) members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) died after the bus they were travelling in crashed near Jopa market in Chipinge.
Seventy one (71) were seriously injured during the incident which happened on Thursday night.
Permanent Secretary Nick Mangwana confirmed the incident on Twitter saying; A St Charles Lwanga School bus carrying ZCC Mbungo members from Chimanimani to Mbungo Masvingo had an accident last night in the Matariana area of Chipinge. Speaking on the incident, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the ZCC congregants who were aboard the bus that belongs to Charles Lwanga Secondary School were travelling for an Easter church gathering.
Assistant Paul Nyathi revealed that the bus veered off the road and plunged into a gorge, killing 29 people on the spot.
Three of the deceased later passed away as they were being ferried to the hospital.
The injured are currently admitted at Chipinge District Hospital.
Assistant Paul Nyathi said that the bus was overloaded and they suspect brake failure could have caused the tragic bus accident
Meanwhile, Chimanimani East legislator, Joshua Sacco (ZANU PF), who attended the accident scene last night, urged drivers to exercise extreme caution on the road.
