GEORGE ‘Mastermind’ Shaya, regarded by many as the greatest ever footballer in Zimbabwe, has died.
He was 77.
Shaya has been ill for some time.
His death was confirmed by journalist, video and film producer Tafadzwa Nyikadzino, who said the great legendary striker died this Tuesday morning in Harare.
“Dynamos football legend George Shaya has died. Sources close to the family confirmed the news this morning. Shaya played for Dynamos and the Rhodesian national team during the 1960s and 1970s. He is considered one of Dynamos’ all-time finest players,” said Nyikadzino.
The five-time Soccer Star of the Year had been battling illness for a while. This led doctors to recommend that his left leg be amputated, which was done in 2019.
In his illustrious career, Shaya won the Soccer Star of the Year five times; 1969, 1972, 1975, 1976 and 1977, a record which is still to be replicated by any player in history.
Meanwhile, opposition MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere has mourned Shaya, describing his death as extremely sad news.
“This is extremely sad news. Deepest condolences to the Shaya family and the #DeMbare movement on the passing of a legend. Rest In Peace, king,” said Mahere.
