A 19km stretch on the Harare-Mutare highway has been identified as the most dangerous spot on Zimbabwe’s roads, following 21 accidents that happened there leading to 14 deaths since March.
Police say the 19 km stretch starts at Mukuti Business Centre near Peter House College and passes through the town of Marondera.
It has become the most hazardous in the country, recordinh 21 accidents and claiming 14 lives since March this year.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has since expressed concern over the high number of accidents and is now carrying out an operation to rid the area of illegal taxi operators and unroadworthy vehicles. The operation is being done in conjunction with the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe.
“We are very much concerned with these accidents on this stretch as they have claimed lives and we are working to ensure the area becomes safe to road users,” said ZRP in the Mashonaland East town of Marondera.
The ZRP has also impounded vehicles which have bar lights in the wake of claims that they are contributing to accidents.
According to Section 66 of Statutory Instrument 129 of 2015, no vehicle shall move on the road while fitted with additional lights which may cause danger to other road users. □
