OPPOSITION MDC founding member and economist Eddie Cross authored the biography of President Emmerson Mnangagwa which has been officially unveiled this Thursday at State House in Harare.
The biography, named “A Life of Sacrifice” has been launched at a ceremony before a small crowd of fully vaccinated guests numbering less than 50, the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services announced.
President Mnangagwa was with his wife Auxillia, and were joined by Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Misheck Sibanda at the podium. His deputy Constantino Chiwenga was absent and has not appeared in public for weeks, amid reports he is not well.
A representative of the publishers, Rachel Jambaya and as well as the book author Eddie Cross, were also at the podium, as were senior Government officials and members of the business community.
Cross said he got to know more about President Mnangagwa more during the time they were writing the book, and praised his commitment to the country’s development.
In his review of the book, Sibanda said it captured the history of the country and the life of the President.
A former civil servant and economist, Cross founded the MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai. In 1999, Cross was asked by Tsvangirai join the organisation and become its first Secretary for Economic Affairs.
He spent the next 18 years in a variety of executive positions at national level. In 2008, he stood for election in Bulawayo South and was elected as MDC Member of Parliament.
Cross won the seat again in 2013 with an increased majority and only retired from Parliament in 2018.
“I was then asked by the new President of the Republic of Zimbabwe to assist with the economic stabilisation and recovery after the 2017 Military Assisted Transition and again in 2018 when a new Government was sworn into power,” Cross says.
“On retiring from Parliament and Party politics in 2018, I resumed my business activities and resumed the active Chairmanship of Cross Holdings.”
