MDC Alliance chairperson for Chiredzi District James Kampota has died after battling Covid-19, the party’s deputy national spokesperson Clifford Hlatshwayo has confirmed.

In a statement sent to ZimbabweVoice.com by the party’s spokesperson for Masvingo Province, Kampota succumbed to Covid-19-related complications.

“It is with great shock that we announce the passing on of our founding member, Chairman James Kampota. The entire Masvingo Province has been plunged into mourning.

“On behalf of the MDC Alliance we would like to convey our deepest condolences to the Kampota Family. We are with you at the time of mourning,” said MDC Alliance deputy spokesperson in the province, Lee Mahachi.

MDC Alliance deputy national spokesperson Clifford Hlatshwayo confirmed the death of the veteran opposition activist.

“One of the MDC Alliance hardworking, loyal and long serving Constituency Chairperson Cde Leader Kampota has been promoted to glory today. He was the CCC chairperson for Chiredzi West,” said Hlatshwayo.

In 2019, Kampota was accused as one of MDC leaders in Chiredzi planning to host a heavily armed insurgence team from South Africa to destabilize the district.

The report, said to be a Zimbabwean intelligence document, placed six MDC members including Chiredzi Town Council Chairman Gibson Hwende, former MP for Zaka West Festus Dumbu and James Kampota as potential threats to peace and security in the district. □
