As police prepare to clamp down on unnecessary movements, new cases of Covid-19 have risen dramatically with Zimbabwe recording 2264 new cases on Wednesday alone.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care advised that cases continue shooting up and the majority of them are of the deadly Delta variant.
All the 2264 new cases are local and appear to now spread evenly across the country.
Mashonaland West (401), Harare Metropolitan (336), Matabeleland South (320) and Mashonaland East (289) topped the list of new infections.
Of the 34 deaths recorded, 10 were in the hotspot areas of Mashonaland West. Midlands (7), Harare (6) and Manicaland with 4 deaths had the highest figures.
To date, Zimbabwe has had 60 227 confirmed cases, including 42 330 recoveries and 1 973 deaths. To date, a total of 819 058 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
Cabinet this Tuesday announced a return to the lockdown measures of early 2020 where movement was restricted to only essential services and a tight curfew of 6.30pm to 6.00am has been introduced. Police had yet to enforce the strict lockdown yesterday. ■
