MDC Alliance president Nelson Chamisa has distanced himself from business tycoon Kudakwashe Tagwirei after allegations were made that Chamisa was compromised and drives a Toyota Landcruiser SUV sponsored by Tagwirei.

Tagwirei, a filthy-rich Zanu-PF linked businessman, has been trending in the news all week following revelations by a Washington-based investigative organisation that he benefits from close links with the ruling Zanu-PF leadership. Many Zimbabweans on social media then alleged that Chamisa was compromised and hence he would not publicly condemn Tagwirei.

Chamisa previously did a multi-million dollar logistics business with the Robert Mugabe family, at a time Muagbe was accused of violence and oppression against MDC members. In 2015, Chamisa, a lawyer, represented Zuva Petroleum in an infamous case that saw tens of thousands of workers retrenched across other sectors of the economy.

Zuva Petroleum is allegedly linked to top Zanu-PF officials, which has led to current accusations that Chamisa was compromised hence his lukewarm response to matters of corruption by Government-linked officials.

Stung by the allegations, Chamisa came out of the closet yesterday and said his party is self-funded by its membership and he as the party leader draws no salary.

“Tagwirei is a dirty man. Tagwirei is nowhere near the MDC (Alliance). We never received any funding or fuel coupons from Tagwirei. The allegations are being made by stupid people,” said Chamisa.

He also admitted that he drives a Landcruiser, but said it was bought from a local car sale by the party and is a second-hand vehicle, not brand new as alleged.

Watch Chamisa make his rebuttal in the video below:

In addition, Chamisa has said the MDC Alliance belongs to the people and not to anyone. He says the party can’t be captured by anyone as it is funded by its leaders and members from their meagre incomes. – Zimbabwe Voice
