CHIPOLOPOLO 22-year-old striker Patson Daka is going places following confirmation of his move to English Premiership club Leicester City in a record US$41 million (£23m) deal.

Daka will this week conclude a reportedly £23 million transfer from Austrian champions RB Salzburg to the 2015/2016 English champions.

Fans of Leicester, in the meantime, can be excited about one of the hottest prospects in Austrian football. Daka has scored 27 goals in 28 games for Red Bull Salzburg and, according to Transfermarkt, is by far the most valuable player in the Austrian Bundesliga.

Daka’s goalscoring prowess has also drawn comparisons to former Salzburg striker Erling Haaland. Daka himself, however, is not keen on that comparison. “There’ll only be one Haaland, and there’ll only be one Patson,” Daka has said in an interview with The Guardian. “I just want to become the best vision of myself.”

Back in Zambia, his former coach is happy with the Leicester City move and believes the youngster is headed for an even bigger club.

“It is a very good move in my opinion and he will succeed there because I have known Patson to be a good listener and a good learner,” Ex-Zambia Under-17 national team coach Chris Kaunda said.

Patson was part of Kaunda’s Zambia Under-17 team that made history six years ago as the first Junior Chipolopolo team to qualify for an AFCON U17 in 2015 where they made a group stage exit in Niger.

The core of the same team, that included Patson’s RB Salzburg club mate and midfielder Enock Mwepu, eventually won the 2017 AFCON U20 as hosts.

“I believe he is still moving up, better things are coming for him,” Kaunda said.

“I don’t see him staying at Leicester for more than two seasons and moving there is a good entry point.

“He made a wise move to go to a club where he believes he will get game time and not a club where there is massive pressure on the coach to win the league.”

Patson scored 34 competitive goals for RB Salzburg in the just ended campaign with 27 of them coming in the league that helped them retain the Austrian Bundesliga for an eighth successive time.

Leicester snapped up Daka following reported summer interest from their Premiership rivals Liverpool, West Ham and Chelsea ■
