- It’s alleged that the woman, who works as a hospital receptionist, had dumped her lover and he retaliated by hiring an excavator to have the double-story house flattened on Thursday.
A four-bedroom house in Mpumalanga demolished following a bitter lovers’ tiff was in the process of being sold for just over R1m.
The demolition, which took place in KaMagugu, a semi-suburb outside Mbombela, caused a social media storm last week as its video clips were widely shared. It is alleged that the house was destroyed following a lovers’ quarrel between health department employees in an office romance for years.
It’s alleged that the woman, who works as a hospital receptionist, had dumped her lover and he retaliated by hiring an excavator to have the double-story house flattened on Thursday.
Sowetan learned yesterday that the house had been put on the market a few days before it was demolished.
Property agent Abie Ndlela from Kellaprince Property Group in Mbombela said he was baffled by the boyfriend’s action as the house had been listed for sale about three days before it was demolished. It is alleged the woman had intended to sell the property which boasted four bedrooms, three bathrooms and a double garage.
“The seller stood to net at least R950,000 from the sale of that house. It was a great house and I had already lined up four people interested in buying it. There were two offers from other individuals. I don’t understand the man’s logic for destroying that property. They could have sorted their issues amicably and then split the profit from the sale. They just threw all that money away,” said Ndlela.
Sowetan visited the house yesterday and was confronted by rubble – there was no sign of broken furniture or household contents. Neighbours said the lady, known as Thembi, had not been staying at the house for some time. Her boyfriend is known as Zakes.
Attempts to get comments from Zakes and Thembi failed.
The couple’s neighbours said they were woken by the sounds of an excavator heading to their neighbour’s house on Thursday morning.
They said Zakes was enraged after Thembi decided to end the relationship. It’s alleged that she owned the land on which the house was built by Zakes. They were not married but had made plans to marry.
“What I know is that the boyfriend was very angry. He hired an excavator to demolish the house because the lady ended their relationship after he built her that house. The lady was not even there when the house was demolished. I think she won’t feel good about this,” said another neighbour who didn’t want to be named.
A colleague of Thembi told Sowetan the two worked together at Rob Ferreira Hospital.
“They work here, both of them. The guy works at human resources, while she works as a receptionist,” said the colleague. 🔺
