ZEC among the most credible elections bodies in the world, says Gutu

By Mutsa Makuvaza

FORMER MDC spokesperson Obert Gutu says the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) is one of the most credible elections management body in the world and should even be invited to manage future U.S. elections.

Gutu, a lawyer by profession, has retired from active political participation but regularly gives opinion on political matters.

Writing on social media, he said:

“In their next elections, the United States 🇺🇸 should ZEC to enable them to obtain some insights on how to prepare for and conduct a free and fair election.

“… ZEC is one of the most credible & efficient election management bodies in the whole, wide world,” Gutu said.

He said this as outgoing U.S. president Donald Trump is disputing the November 2020 elections which he lost to Democrat Joe Biden, but his “evidence” has been dismissed as not credible.

ZEC has previously been invited to manage and assist with election processes in the SADC region.

Its functions include helping to prepare for, conduct and supervise elections to the office of President and to Parliament;
elections to provincial and metropolitan councils and the governing bodies of local authorities.

It also manages elections of members of the National Council of Chiefs;
referendums; and to ensure that those elections and referendums are conducted efficiently, freely, fairly, transparently and in accordance with the law;

ZEC also helps to register voters; to compile voters’ rolls and registers; to ensure the proper custody and maintenance of voters’ rolls and registers; and to delimit constituencies, wards and other electoral boundaries.

Furthermore, ZEC is charged with the design, print and distribution of ballot papers, approving the form of and procure ballot boxes, and establishing and operating polling centres; among many other functions. – Zimbabwe Voice 🔺
