Twitter followers dump Trump in wake of election defeat

US President Donald Trump is reportedly haemorrhaging Twitter followers in the wake of his election defeat to incoming president Joe Biden.

Mr Trump’s days in the White House are numbered and it appears thousands of users on the social media site are not hanging around to read about his baseless claims of voter fraud.

The outgoing commander-in-chief’s fan base has taken a hit every day this week and some 46,000 accounts have unfollowed him since 22 November.

Those figures are according to the social media analytics site Social Blade and reviewed by Newsweek.

Some 10,000 Twitter accounts unsubscribed from Mr Trump’s feed on 25 November alone, Newsweek reported.

Meanwhile, president-elect Biden has seen his Twitter following surge since major news networks declared him the election winner on 7 November.

He picked up some 130,000 followers on 25 November, according to the Social Blade figures.

Some analysts believe Mr Trump’s decrease in followers could be due a Twitter clear out of bots.

But one man behind a social media campaign calling on people to desert the president has a different theory.

Andrew Lazar, who is spearheading the UnfollowThePres project, told Newsweek he wants to take away the president’s “favourite toy”.

He said: “By January, he will no longer be relevant to our national conversation. His Twitter account, however, still gives him enormous influence.”

Mr Lazar added: “He’s using that influence to continue to divide our country. I mean, the guy can’t concede a loss and wants to broadcast false fraud claims to his adherents. It’s dangerous.”

Mr Biden was on 19.9 million followers as of Thursday evening, still well behind Mr Trump on 88.8 million. – Online
