A 30-year-old man allegedly jumped headlong into the water in the Zambezi River while trying to swim and in the process hit his head on a rock resulting in his death.
Police confirmed the tragic incident which happened on Sunday and identified the deceased as Zenzo Munkuli of Hwange.
The man died while being rushed to Binga District Hospital moments after the incident.
The deceased, popularly known as rasta by his colleagues because he was dreadlocked, was a kombi driver plying the Hwange-Binga route.
On Sunday he drove to Binga with his young brother Mr Milton Munkuli and their friend Mr Blessing Nyoni where they proceeded to the sand beach to swim before tragedy struck.
The tragic incident happened at the Binga Sand Beach on the Zambezi River, police said.
The sand beach is located on the Zimbabwean side of the Zambezi River between the mountains. It stretches for about 200 metres from the current edge of water to the river bank at the foot of a hill, and is bounded by rocky parts on the eastern and western sides, where it stretches for about 300 metres. ■
