BOTSWANA has withdrawn from the 2020 COSAFA Women’s Under-17 Championship set for South Africa next month, citing unavailability of players with the majority writing their final year exams.
The return to Women’s football in Africa after the Covid-19 pandemic disturbances was confirmed by the announcement of the 2020 COSAFA Women’s Championship set for Nelson Mandela Bay in South Africa between the 3rd and 14th of next month.
The senior Women tournament will run concurrently with the U-17 tournament which unfortunately will have to be held without a key member of the COSAFA region.
This comes after Botswana withdrew from the tournament indicating that most of their players for the Under-17 age group will be writing exams during the same period.
The rising number of COVID-19 cases in Botswana, mainly in schools and the need to make up for lost learning time have also been noted as challenges which have seen Dipitse withdrawing from the competition.
Botswana will however still be sending their senior women’s side to the COSAFA tournament.
The development will see the U-17 competition being reduced to five teams which will inevitably come with a change of format.
Hosts South Africa will be joined by the Comoros, East African guest nation Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The fixtures will be announced on Thursday when the draw will be conducted along with the senior Women’s Championship that will also be staged in Nelson Mandela Bay next month.
Zimbabwe have their work cut as the Young Mighty Warriors have not played competitive football since January this year.
