FIVE notorious armed robbers have been arrested and are facing robbery, attempted murder and murder charges.
Among the arrested is one Polite Sibanda (30), who recently deserted the army, and Khumbulani Mapingire (38) who also has been a law enforcement officer with the ZRP.
The other three members of the notorious gang are Mandla Malinga (45), Dingani Ndlovu (36) and Mehluli Ncube (40).
Police say the robbers were wanted in connection with a robbery incident which occurred in Belvedere in Harare recently.
“Two of the armed robbers, Malinga and Ndlovu were arrested in Bulawayo. They were conducting their robbery activities in Harare and Bulawayo.
“Police are leaving no stone unturned to bring the other five who are at large, to book,” said national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
He added that two people died in the shootout on the day of the Belvedere robbery, but would not disclose further details.
Last week, police lamented the high crime rate especially involving guns and police uniforms across the country. There were indications that some unscrupulous members of the police have been loaning their uniforms and service weapons to criminals for a fee.
Other daring cops have been erecting unsanctioned roadblocks before proceeding to fleece unsuspecting motorists. Nyathi urged members of the public to scrutinise law enforcement agents at roadblocks and to demand their official identification when in doubt. – Zimbabwe Voice ■
